Once again, the students in the Stellenbosch Art Law Clinic are working on writing a new booklet which deals with the amendments that are soon going to be part of South African copyright law. To provide some context, the Clinic was started in collaboration with its German counterparts at the University of Münster with the goal of publishing a booklet pertaining to South African Copyright law. This booklet was published in 2023 and was a wonderful milestone for the Clinic to reach. Now, with the Copyright Act in the process of being amended and soon to be passed, the Stellenbosch Art Law Clinic has – in collaboration with the Clinic at the University of Münster – decided to undertake the task of writing about the amendments that are soon to going to be part of our law.
There are many aspects of the Copyright Act that will predominantly remain the same, for example, some provisions have merely been reworded and organised more carefully. The systems of copyright regulation are undergoing drastic changes, including revisions to the definitions of the types of works that are included in copyright protection. The new booklet will break down all of the amendments with attentive circumspection of both perspectives, that of the creators, their work, protection of their work, and that of the users to evaluate the importance of protection and acknowledgment against the proposed amendments
The students who are participating in this task are all very excited about this adventure and an amazing opportunity to grow as writers and academics. This is not an easy task to take on during one’s legal studies, but due to the considerate planning and hard work done by everyone involved, it promises to be a successful endeavour.
Watch this space for updates as the booklet progresses!
