What started as the brainchild of the University of Münster in Germany expanded and blossomed into a fully-fledged established society at Stellenbosch University, the Stellenbosch Art Law Clinic. The Stellenbosch Art Law Clinic, lovingly referred to as the SALC, started out as an extension of our German collaborative partners. As a student town rich in creativity and an appreciation for art, Stellenbosch is an artistic hub for talented artists who may know the ins and outs of sharing their art with the world around them, but not so much their rights as creatives. Acknowledging this issue was the building block for the clinic as we know it today. In 2022, the clinic set out to achieve its aims of encouraging a dialogue between the art world and the legal world, equipping creatives with information about their rights, and raising the overall education of their members.
One year after its establishment, the SALC came together to celebrate its first birthday with a lovely gathering at the Toco Headquarters on Ryneveld Street. The festivities have given the clinic’s members the opportunity to reflect on its development and how it has grown into the bourgeoning society it is today. Now boasting over 40 members, the clinic has achieved a wide range of accomplishments in its first year of existence and has ended the year with its new official status as a Stellenbosch University society. The SALC has hosted lectures and officially published the heart of the SALC project – an informational booklet titled Art and Law – A Comprehensive Guide to South African Art Law. One can only wonder what the SALC will achieve and what heights it will aspire to within the next year.
