On a rainy Thursday evening in Dorp Street, the Stellenbosch Art Law Clinic (SALC) hosted its first lecture for 2023. The event was hosted at the GUS Gallery, the off-campus extension of Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Visual Arts Department, on 31 August. The lecture, presented by SALC members Lilitha France, Elke Mostert, Genevieve Rousseau and Amory Smith; revolved around topics such as contract law, gallery contracting, consignment, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), intellectual property, resale rights, and the elusive world of artificial intelligence (AI).
Genevieve Rousseau, chairperson of the SALC at the time, commented on how the lecture aimed to serve the clinic’s purpose of bridging of the gap between the art world and the legal world. “The aim of our lecture was to inform art students about the basics of art law, including the basics of contracting. The concept of contracting can be extremely daunting, so we hope that by familiarizing students with how contract law works, we can get their confidence up,” said Rousseau. “We also wanted to inform them about where art law is going and the impact of AI and NFTs on the current art industry,” she added.
The lecture series is one of the tools that the SALC intends on using to meet its goals of facilitating a knowledge sharing experience and bridging the gap between the art world and the legal world. The SALC team hopes to host more lectures in the future in order to bring their ethos of collaboration and empowering art students with knowledge and confidence in commercializing their work. Stay tuned for another interactive, collaborative and enriching event!
